BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (May 23, 2024) – A 58-year-old man driving a scooter tragically died in a Brownsille, Brooklyn car accident at the intersection of Linden Boulevard and Thomas Boyland Street.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday. A scooter rider was heading across the street when he was hit by a BMW.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Scooters have become increasingly popular across New York City. But the sharp rise in electric scooters on the road has also led to a rise in scooter accidents. According to ABC 7, “Authorities say 680 people have been injured in scooter-related incidents in New York City so far this year, compared to 588 last year — a 16% increase.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to scooter accidents.
A large number of car accidents involve drivers who were simply traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive their vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the road. If any driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting scooter riders.
Scooter accidents are largely preventable when drivers and scooter riders obey traffic regulations. Part of the problem is that scooter riders have a very small profile and are therefore more likely to be overlooked. The family of any person who died in a scooter accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the scooter rider killed in this Brownsville collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be some accountability for the victim’s family.
