Liability for Long Island Home Fires

Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year in preventable residential fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “During this five-year period, US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 328,590 home structure fires per year. These fires caused an annual average of 2,600 civilian deaths; 10,770 civilian fire injuries; and $8.9 billion in direct property damage.” There are many different common causes of residential fires.

  • Lit candles
  • Electrical malfunctions
  • Space heaters
  • Cooking accidents
  • Gas explosions

Depending on the unique facts of any given case, there could be multiple liable parties for any residential fire. Property owners in New York have a heavy obligation to maintain their premises in a safe condition. This requires that they abide by all fire and safety codes. If a property owner fails to take reasonable measures to prevent fires, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Any person injured in a fire may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
