MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (January 26, 2025) – A man was seriously injured in a Manhattan subway train accident by Grand Avenue and 125th Street.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place on Friday. The man was struck at the 86th St. Subway Station.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident in order to help the victim. He was taken to a local area hospital in order to receive treatment for his injuries.

The circumstances leading up to the Manhattan subway accident remain unknown at this time.

Liability for Manhattan Train Accidents

Deaths involving New York City subways have continued to rise over recent years. According to one article by the New York Post, “Last year’s 88 track deaths were 35% above the 2018 and 2019 averages — 65 each year. For context, 120 pedestrians died above ground last year in crashes with cars or trucks, close to the average of 121 in 2018 and 2019.” There are a number of common reasons that subway train accidents take place.

  • Operator mistakes remain one of the leading causes of subway accidents. This may include instances where train operators misjudge their speeds or fail to respond to appropriate signals.
  • Subway trains can also experience mechanical failures that may potentially lead to an accident.
  • The New York City subway system is one of the oldest in the world. Deteriorating conditions can lead to accidents in certain circumstances.

Subway operators have a legal obligation to protect customers from foreseeable sources of harm. They must exercise due care in order to avoid colliding with any pedestrian or vehicle ahead of them. They must slow down and use their horn when necessary in the event that there is an obstacle on the tracks. If a subway operator fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of subway train accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Head injuries
  • Amputations
  • Organ damage
  • Death

Subway train accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where train operators are not properly scanning the tracks ahead of them. Even if a pedestrian is completely still on a set of train tracks, train operators must still do everything in their power to avoid hitting them. But far too often this does not take place. Any person injured in a New York City subway train accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
