Philadelphia Man, 53, Dies After a Wrong-Way Driver Triggers a Deadly Collision on Route 1 in Trenton
TRENTON, NEW JERSEY (October 31, 2026) – A 53-year-old man from Philadelphia has tragically died in a wrong-way motor vehicle collision on Route 1 in Trenton.
Mercer County officials are saying that the crash took place around 2:45 AM on Friday. Two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of Route 1 by New York Ave. after one of them entered into the opposing lanes of traffic.
Firefighters and first responders were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims. Sadly, one person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash remains ongoing.
New Jersey law requires that all drivers maintain their vehicle on the right half of the roadway under N.J.S.A. 39:4-82. Drivers must also operate their vehicle at a speed that would be reasonably safe given the prevailing road conditions. It is also illegal for any driver to operate their vehicle under the influence of any alcohol or other substance. It is important that several steps are taken after any motor vehicle collision in New Jersey.
Wrong-way collisions are often substantially more dangerous than other types of crashes. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, about 500 people are killed every year in accidents involving wrong-way drivers. Many of these incidents involve drivers that were intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. The family of any person killed in a wrong-way collision is able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed in this Trenton car accident. Any person who may have more information should contact the police. There needs to be a thorough review into what went wrong so that all responsible parties can be held accountable.
