Male Pedestrian Critically Injured In Staten Island Car Accident

Investigation Underway After 19-Year-Old Pedestrian Seriously Injured In Staten Island Along Richmond Road

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (September 26, 2024) – A 19-year-old pedestrian has tragically died in a Staten Island car accident along Richmond Road.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday. A pedestrian was crossing by Richmond Road and Baltic Avenue when they were hit by a vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in order to receive care.

Liability For Staten Island Car Accidents

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of car accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “Speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2022, killing 12,151, or an average of over 33 people on a typical day. The total number of fatal motor-vehicle crashes attributable to speeding was 10,922.” Several other factors may contribute to a pedestrian accident.

  • Most pedestrian accidents occur at intersections.
  • Pedestrian collisions are more likely during low-light conditions.
  • A large number of drivers that hit pedestrians were intoxicated at the time of the collision.

Drivers must do everything within reason to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. This includes checking their blind spots before making turns and using their horns when necessary. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Cities can take a number of steps in order to reduce the likelihood of pedestrian collisions.

  • Cities can install traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps.
  • Cities can make sure all intersections are well illuminated.
  • Cities can study which roads and intersections have the greatest number of collisions.

Many of the injuries associated with pedestrian collisions may not be immediately obvious. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek medical aid as early as possible. It is also a good idea to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
