How To Avoid Accidents On Icy Roads

March is one of the snowiest months of the year in many states. Ice covered roads can be dangerous for even the most experienced driver. Although a vehicle equipped for snow and icy roads can make such a drive safer, it can also give motorists a false sense of security when driving on icy roads.

You may not be able to completely avoid an accidents while driving in a storm or coming into contact with black ice on a sunny day. However, if you are aware of the basic safety tips for driving on icy roads, you may be able to reduce the likelihood of getting into such an accidents.

Important Safety Tips for Driving on Icy Roads

Below are important safety tips you should consider when driving on icy roads:

  • You should stay off the road until the conditions have improved.
  • If you have to be on the road, your speed should stay below 45 MPH. You may need to go even slower, given the specific conditions of the road you are driving on.
  • Leave additional room with the vehicle in front of you.
  • Do not suddenly slam on the brakes. Slowly let off the gas and use your brakes as little as possible.
  • Do not use cruise control, as you need to have full control of your car.
  • Use snow tires or tire chains if necessary.
  • Under no circumstance should you drive on icy roads if you are tired, fatigued or under the use of a controlled substance.
