MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (July 26, 2025) – A firefighter has tragically died in a Manhattan hit-and-run car accident along FDR Drive.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:45 am on Thursday. A firefighter was heading down the roadway on a motorcycle when he was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene of the collision.
He was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A full investigation into the deadly hit-and-run collision remains ongoing.
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year in accidents involving drivers that flee the scene. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” Many different factors could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.
Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise care to avoid colliding with motorcycles and other drivers. They must slow down when necessary. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a motorcyclist, this could be construed as negligence.
