95-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Beat Patient to Death at Seagate Rehab Nursing Home on West 29th Street in Coney Island
CONEY ISLAND, NEW YORK (September 17, 2025) – An elderly patient was allegedly beaten to death by a 95-year-old woman at the Seagate Rehab Nursing Home on West 29th Street in Coney Island.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:04 PM on September 14. According to a preliminary investigation, a 95-year-old woman suffering from dementia was involved in some type of argument with an 89-year-old fellow resident at the facility.
At some point, the argument turned physical, and the 95-year-old woman picked up a metal object and hit the victim with it. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim.
She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn to receive treatment. A full investigation into the assault at Seagate Rehab Nursing Home on West 29th Street remains ongoing.
Assaults and abuse in a nursing home setting remain quite common. According to the World Health Organization, “Around 1 in 6 people 60 years and older experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year. Rates of abuse of older people are high in institutions such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities, with 2 in 3 staff reporting that they have committed abuse in the past year.” In many cases, residents are assaulted by other residents. Several steps should be taken to prevent this from happening.
Nursing homes have a legal obligation to protect residents from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting them from assaults at the hands of other residents. The staff at these facilities must adequately supervise residents all the time. If they have actual or constructive notice that one resident poses a risk of harm to other residents, they must intervene. Failing to intervene could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any nursing home assault.
The vast majority of abuse and assaults that take place in a nursing home are preventable. These incidents tend to happen at facilities that are not following safety protocols. Another major problem is that these facilities may be understaffed. There may simply not be enough people to monitor and take care of all residents. The family of any person who died in a nursing home may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this attack at the Seagate Rehab Nursing Home on West 29th Street in Coney Island. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened. Steps need to be taken to prevent anything like this from taking place again.
