MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (April 9, 2025) – A bicyclist has tragically died in a Soho, Manhattan truck accident near the intersection of Broome Street and Centre Street.
New York City officials are saying the accident took place around 10:13 AM on Thursday. A person in a van opened their door into the path of a cyclist, which caused them to be thrown into the path of a commercial truck going through the intersection.
The truck ran over the cyclist and seriously injured them in the process. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. But medical efforts to revive him were not successful.
A full investigation into the Soho collision remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in collisions with commercial trucks every year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of factors that may contribute to a truck accident.
Truck drivers have a legal obligation to use caution in order to avoid colliding with pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a truck driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a cyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several actions should be taken after any truck accident.
Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a truck accident could extend beyond a truck driver. The driver of any vehicle that opened their door into the path of a cyclist could also be held at fault. Drivers must use caution in order to avoid opening their doors into the path of pedestrians and cyclists. The family of any person who died in a Soho accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the cyclist that died in this Soho truck accident. This was a preventable collision that should not have taken place. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD.
