BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (September 26, 2024) – A cyclist has tragically died in a Sunset Park, Brooklyn collision with a pickup truck near 4th Avenue and 53rd Street.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday. A bicyclist was heading down the road when they were hit by a pickup truck making a left turn onto 53rd Street.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. They were taken to NYU Langone Hospital.
Despite life-saving measures, they died due to their injuries. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year in bicycle collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “For the last 5 years (2017 to 2021), the yearly average has been 883 people on bicycles killed in police reported traffic crashes (NCSA, 2022; Stewart, 2023). Bicyclists accounted for 2.2% of total traffic fatalities in 2021 (Stewart, 2023).” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.
All drivers must use care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver makes a dangerous left turn in front of a bicyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is crucial that evidence is properly preserved after a collision.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. It is important that accident victims are aware of their rights and that those rights are being protected.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the person who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
