NORTH BERGEN, NEW JERSEY (January 27, 2024) – At least six people were injured after a dump truck crashed into a North Bergen Target by 70th St. and 76th St.
North Bergen officials are saying that the accident took place around 2 PM on Friday. A dump truck crashed through a small fence and completely through the wall of a Target.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. Two people were seriously injured. Five people were taken to local area hospitals in order to receive treatment.
One of the victims was in the store bathroom when the truck came barreling through. A full investigation into the dump truck collision remains ongoing at this time.
Dump trucks can be particularly dangerous in car accidents. According to the Engineering News-Record, “Dump truck accidents severe enough that the vehicle had to be towed away rose 9%, hitting 8,206 in 2016, the latest year statistics are available.” A fully loaded dump truck can weigh tens of thousands of pounds, thereby making it dangerous even at much lower speeds. There are a number of measures that dump truck companies should take in order to prevent the likelihood of collisions.
Dump truck drivers will typically need to get a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Many collisions involve drivers that were simply traveling too fast. Pursuant to New Jersey Vehicle Code 39:4-98, all drivers have a legal obligation to operate their vehicle at a safe speed. They must not travel faster than would be reasonable and safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. A driver could be considered speeding, even if they were traveling below the speed limit during periods of inclement weather or other adverse conditions. Victims of dump truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Even if a person’s physical injuries completely heal, many victims of dump truck accidents suffer from long-term psychological trauma. Dump truck collisions are often highly preventable. In many situations, truck drivers could be fatigued from working long hours. In fact, 10% of all truck drivers involved in fatal collisions reported feeling under pressure from their carrier. Any person injured due to the negligence of a dump truck driver may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this North Bergen dump truck accident at Target. It is our sincere hope that all of the victims will be able to make a full recovery. This was a completely preventable collision that should’ve never taken place. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police.
