Four Injured In Monroe Township School Bus Accident

School Bus Was Carrying Students From Monroe Township Middle School Prior to Collision by North State Home Road

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY (January 27, 2024) – At least four students were injured in a Monroe Township school bus collision along North State Home Road.

Monroe Township officials are saying that the collision took place on Thursday afternoon. The school bus was traveling east on North State Home Road when it veered off the road and struck a tree.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. One student was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. The injuries of the three other children were described as more moderate.

It remains unclear what may have led up to the Monroe Township school bus collision.

Liability for School Bus Collisions

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury for children in the United States. According to IIHS, “Seventy percent of child motor vehicle crash deaths in 2022 were passenger vehicle occupants, 16% were pedestrians, and 3% were bicyclists. Child pedestrian and bicyclist deaths declined by 91% and 93%, respectively, since 1975. Passenger vehicle child occupant deaths in 2022 were 56% lower than in 1975.” School bus drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.

  • School bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • School bus drivers should slow down during adverse weather conditions.
  • School bus drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

School buses are considered common carriers. Their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. All school bus drivers must operate their vehicle within a single lane of traffic and only move when it is safe to do so. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that leaves the roadway and collides with a fixed object. It is important that certain steps are taken after any school bus collision.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
  • The accident report for the collision should be collected.
  • An experienced bus accident attorney should be contacted.

If a school bus driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could potentially be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Any person injured in a school bus accident may be able to seek some measures through a civil claim.
