3 Construction Workers Suffer Serious Injuries After Building Materials Drop Through Roof of Astoria Building

On June 20, 2017, three construction workers were seriously injured after a load of building materials delivered to the top of a building in New York City fell through a roof, crashing into a basement. One of the workers was able to escape from the scene. Firefighters and medics had to rescue two other workers who were listed in critical condition.

The two-story brick home was in the process of being renovated into a three-story house in Astoria, Queens. A load of materials that were placed on the roof of the building for renovation collapsed. The materials crashed through the roof all the way to the ground floor or basement.

Inspectors are investigating as to whether the materials were moved properly. According to Building Deputy Commissioner, Timothy Hogan, an engineer should have reviewed the use of the roof before the materials were brought up there.

More Construction Accidents Prove the Importance for Safer Construction Site Procedures

Construction continues to boom in New York City. Unfortunately, lack of safety on construction sites still remains a big issue, resulting in serious injuries and death. New York has had an increasing number of construction related injuries and death over the past few years.

These tragic accidents demonstrate the need for tougher licensing requirements for contractors, more safety inspections, and greater safety training. These precautions may not get rid of all construction related accidents, but it will reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities.
