New York Police Department Investigating Manhattan Car Accident That Left Woman Pinned Under Food Truck
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (May 23, 2024) – A woman was seriously injured in a Manhattan wrong-way car accident that left her pinned underneath a food truck.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place on Monday morning. The NYPD was chasing a driver who began driving the wrong way on West 34th Street near Ninth Avenue.
That driver eventually crashed into Chirp restaurant and hit a food truck. A pedestrian ended up being pinned underneath the food truck and seriously injured.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. The pedestrian suffered broken bones, fractures, and chipped teeth.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in police chases every year. According to USA Today, “Nearly every day, someone is killed during a high-speed chase between police and a suspect. Almost half of the 11,500 people killed since 1979 have been bystanders or passengers in fleeing cars.” Police chases in New York should only be used in a limited number of situations.
Depending on the facts of any case, a police department could be liable for an accident that occurred during a police pursuit. In particular, liability may occur when officers display a reckless disregard for the safety of the public. This could include instances when officers chased suspects through densely populated pedestrian areas. Several steps should be taken after any police chase accident.
It can be hard to know what to do after any car accident. Victims are often left with high medical bills and may need to take extensive time off of work. Many victims are so seriously injured that they may never be able to work again. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the woman injured in this collision. Police chases are extremely dangerous and should only ever be used as a last resort. It is our sincere hope that steps are taken to prevent similar accidents.
