New York Police Department Investigating Fatal Belt Parkway Collision That Left Three Teens Dead
BRONX, NEW YORK (September 2, 2026) – At least three people have tragically died and multiple others were injured in a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn car accident on the Belt Parkway.
New York City officials are saying that the collision occurred around 11:35 PM on Tuesday night. A vehicle was traveling down the Belt Parkway shortly after it left a gas station.
An 18-year-old driver of the Cadillac SUV involved reportedly began accelerating as traffic slowed down. A 2024 Honda SUV traveling behind the Cadillac failed to slow down in time and rear-ended that vehicle.
The force of the impact caused the Cadillac to overturn and eject all of the occupants onto the roadway.
Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York City is expected to use the caution and prudence necessary to avoid hitting other vehicles. According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1129(a), “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” Investigators will try to get answers to several questions when evaluating who could be liable for a collision.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle ahead of them, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends a vehicle in their own lane of traffic. These types of collisions are nearly always the result of drivers that are traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions or failing to maintain a safe distance with the vehicle ahead of them.
We at GLK Law Extend our deepest condolences to the family of all of the victims who died in this collision. This was a preventable tragedy that should’ve never taken place. It is our sincere hope that the other victims will be able to make a full recovery. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD.
