QUEENS, NEW YORK (November 27, 2024) – At least three people were injured in a Sunnyside, Queens MTA bus collision by Queens Boulevard and 46th Street.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. An MTA bus driver may have suffered some type of medical episode when they were involved in a collision with several parked vehicles.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
The MTA is involved in a high number of collisions each year. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Cities should take a number of measures in order to prevent collisions.
Drivers have a legal obligation to take steps in order to avoid bus accidents. This includes traveling the speed limit. But what many drivers do not realize is that they may need to travel well below the speed limit on occasion, depending on the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could be the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any MTA bus collision.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for a bus collision. This is true even if a collision was largely caused by a medical emergency. Whether or not liability will apply will depend in large part on how foreseeable a medical emergency was. For example, certain medical conditions should typically preclude drivers from operating commercial vehicles.
