BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 28, 2025) – One person has died and another person was injured in a Midwood, Brooklyn car accident with a moped on East 8th Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:30 PM on Monday. A 17-year-old driver on a moped was heading north on E. 8th St. when they were involved in a collision with a 2023 Genesis G80.
The force of the impact ejected the driver of the moped and a passenger. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims.
Sadly, the teenage driver died at the scene. The passenger was taken to Maimonides Hospital with serious injuries.
Accidents involving micromobility devices like scooters and mopeds continue to edge up as these devices grow more popular. According to UCSF, “E-bicycle injuries doubled every year from 2017 to 2022, while e-scooter injuries rose by 45 percent each year. Injured e-riders tended to be slightly older and wore helmets less often than conventional riders. And e-scooter riders were more likely to sustain internal injuries than conventional scooter riders, while upper extremity injuries were more common among non-EV riders.” Many factors contribute to moped accidents.
Every driver in New York City must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any vehicle or moped rider in the roadway. This may necessitate that the driver travel well below the stated speed limit. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian or moped rider, they could be held liable for a collision. Several steps should be taken after any moped collision.
Car accidents are among the most traumatic events that people go through in their lives. Many people are left with traumatic injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. It is also common that victims are left with permanent disabilities that impair their ability to enjoy everyday activities. The family of any person who died in a moped collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the teenager killed in this collision. It is our sincere hope that the other victim will be able to make a full recovery. City officials should consider measures to help make the city safer for pedestrians and moped riders.
