Staten Island Is the Site of Yet Another Construction Fatality

Construction workers and their loved ones need to understand the inherent risks at worksites and how to get help in the event of an on-the-job accident.

The construction site at a house in Prince’s Bay, Staten Island was the site of yet another construction worker death in New York. A story on WABC-TV reported that 56-year-old Eugeniusz Klecha, a man identified by a police source, plunged to his death from a house that was under construction. Police responded to the scene at 260 Bradford Avenue at 3:15 p.m. and found Klecha on the ground. He had suffered head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The worker was not wearing a safety harness and there was no supervisor on the scene when the accident occurred, according to law enforcement sources. Permits were obtained for the project and a sign outside the property identified the general contractor for the site as Masseria Construction Group. Although no criminality is suspected in this unfortunate death, the city Buildings Department is investigating.

Yet Another Accident To Prove the Need for Safer Construction Site Procedures

Stories like this are sadly not uncommon in the construction industry. It well known that construction is an inherently dangerous industry to work in. Although some accidents may be avoidable, most can be prevented if certain safety procedures are put in place and enforced by the contractor and project owners.

For instance, in the case of Klecha’s fatal accident, had he been wearing a safety harness, he may not have fallen to his death. Moreover, perhaps if the contractor had taken the extra effort to be on site or at least placed a manager on site to enforce such safety procedures, the accident may have been avoided altogether.
