Roundup Glyphosate Fact Sheet – Cancer and Other Health Concerns

Roundup has been a popular weed killer used by gardeners, farmers and landscapers since the product was first released by Monsanto for sale in 1974. Believing it was safe, many Americans have inadvertently exposed themselves to the Roundup cancer risk at no fault of their own.

In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency on Cancer announced its findings that glyphosate-based herbicides, the most popular of which is Roundup, are “probably” carcinogens.

Most Widely Used Pesticide

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide used as weed control in agriculture, vegetation control in non-agricultural areas, and harvesting aid as crop desiccant. Its use in agriculture has increased considerably due to the development of glyphosate-resistant GM crop varieties. The herbicide has also been used to control illegal crops through massive aerial applications.

A February 2016 study confirms that glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide. The findings also include:

• Americans have applied 1.8 million tons of glyphosate since its introduction in 1974.
• Worldwide, 9.4. million tons of the chemical has been sprayed on fields – enough to spray nearly half a pound of Roundup on every cultivated acre of land in the world.
• Globally, glyphosate use has risen almost 15-fold since Roundup Ready GMO crops were introduced.

Roundup Cancer Concerns

Glyphosate has been the subject of regular assessments by national and international regulatory agencies. All had established that glyphosate has a relatively low toxicity in mammals. However, in March 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report concluding that the herbicide and its formulated products are probably carcinogenic in humans and animals. The IARC based its decision on years of published and peer-reviewed scientific studies. The team of international scientists found there was an association between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Roundup Cancer Lawsuits

More than 11,000 people have filed lawsuit against Monsanto Company (now Bayer) alleging that exposure to Roundup herbicide caused them or their loved ones to develop cancer, most commonly non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto covered up the risks.
