Male Pedestrian, 55, Died While Trying to Cross Veterans Memorial Highway in Suffolk County
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK (November 16, 2025) – A male pedestrian has tragically died in a Suffolk County car accident while attempting to cross Veterans Memorial Highway.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:11 PM on Thursday. The pedestrian was attempting to get across the street when he was hit by a Honda Civic.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Drivers must use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, “Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Drivers should take many actions to avoid hitting pedestrians.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any pedestrian accident beyond the driver deemed to be at fault. For example, the company that manufactured the vehicle involved could bear some liability if it was caused by a vehicle systems failure. A tire blowout could cause a driver to lose control and hit a pedestrian. It is important that certain actions are taken after any pedestrian collision.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the results of clear safety lapses. For example, a driver may have traveled too fast for the prevailing conditions. Victims of pedestrian accidents are protected by a number of laws. These laws extend to the family of any person who died in a collision. They can seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who died in this Suffolk County collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
