The car was apparently traveling around 10 mph when the victim was run over. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help him.
He was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite life-saving measures at the hospital, his condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead.
A full investigation of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park incident remains ongoing.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in motor vehicle collisions involving emergency vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (57%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 23% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 11%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 7% of the deaths.” Emergency drivers should take several actions to avoid collisions with pedestrians.
Police departments tend to have a great deal of immunity when officers are involved in collisions during emergencies. But these officers must have their lights and sirens on. When a police officer is not responding to an actual emergency, they must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, as would any other driver. If a police officer fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, this may be construed as negligence. Several actions should be taken after any collision with a police officer.
The vast majority of pedestrian collisions are totally preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are distracted or simply not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. It is common for police officers to bend traffic rules because they feel as though no one will hold them accountable. This is simply not the case. The family of any pedestrian who died in a motor vehicle accident with a police officer may be able to seek some measure of accountability and justice through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this collision. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to investigators. It is our sincere hope that steps are taken to prevent other tragedies like this.
