BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (October 12, 2024) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Brooklyn hit-and-run car accident along Bedford Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place on Thursday. A male pedestrian was crossing the street when he was hit by a white SUV.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, he later died due to the severe nature of his injuries.
The police are still trying to find the driver involved in the collision. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Community members are calling on city officials to make the roadway safer.
Hit-and-run collisions remain all too common across New York and the United States. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “The current analysis found that both the rates of hit-and-run crashes and fatalities are increasing. There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds.” There are a number of measures that city officials can take in order to prevent collisions.
All drivers have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian collision.
The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable. They tend to involve drivers who are speeding. In fact, nearly a third of fatal pedestrian accidents involve drivers operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the family of the pedestrian killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. The driver involved should do the right thing and turn themselves in.
