One Person Killed In Brownsville, Brooklyn Police Shooting

Investigation Underway After Man Died in Brownsville Police Shooting Near Brooklyn Precinct

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (September 7, 2025) – A man was killed in a Brownsville NYPD shooting near the entrance to a Brooklyn precinct.

New York Police Department officials are saying that the incident took place around 5:30 AM by East New York Avenue and Amboy Street. Officers were called to the scene after getting a report about a man with a knife.

Officers confronted the suspect who walked into the front vestibule of the Brooklyn precinct. He allegedly entered an area where only police are allowed to be.

There was some type of altercation with the police officer before he was shocked. A full investigation into the Brownsville police shooting remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Brooklyn Police Shootings

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in police shootings across the United States every year. According to Statista, “Between 2013 and 2024, over 1,000 people have been killed by police every year. Some of the most infamous examples include the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 and the shooting of Breonna Taylor earlier that year. Within the provided time period, the most people killed by police in the United States was in 2024, at 1,375 people.” Police departments should take a number of measures to prevent shootings.

  • Police departments should ensure their officers are trained in de-escalation techniques.
  • Police departments should equip their officers with less lethal options like tasers.
  • Police officers should typically call for backup in high-risk situations.

Police departments can be held liable for killing a suspect during a police encounter. According to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of law, deprives someone of their rights afforded under the Constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. If a police officer fails to follow a safety rule of their department, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Victims of police shootings tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Death

It can be hard to know what to do after any police shooting. To make matters more complicated, police departments will virtually never accept responsibility for the actions of their officers. If anything, it is more likely that they will blame the victims for what took place. This is why it is so important for any person injured by excessive force to seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
