HYDE PARK, NEW YORK (January 21, 2024) – Several people were injured in a multi-vehicle school bus collision in Hyde Park along Route 9 near Albany Post Road.
Hyde Park Police are saying that the collision took place around 3 PM on Tuesday. A pickup truck was traveling south on Route 9 when it rear-ended a car ahead of it.
That car was sent into the path of an oncoming Hyde Park school bus with 11 students on board. The pickup truck also struck another vehicle in the southbound lane before going off of the roadway and hitting a fence.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. The driver of the vehicle that was pushed into the path of the school bus had to be extricated and transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.
School buses are normally very safe for passengers. But they pose a number of hazards to those in passenger vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 104 people nationwide in 2022, down 3.7% compared to the 108 deaths in 2021, according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” School bus drivers should take a number of actions in order to prevent collisions.
School bus drivers are considered common carriers. They are expected to operate their vehicle with the utmost care in order to avoid collisions. Among other things, they must travel no faster than would be reasonable or prudent given the prevailing conditions of the road. If any driver fails to reduce their speed in order to prevent a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It could be hard to know where to begin after any school bus accident. Victims are often left with serious injuries that may require them to take long periods of time away from school or work. To make matters worse, bus companies will often do everything in their power to deny liability if they’re involved in a collision. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a personal injury claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this Hyde Park school bus accident. It is our sincere hope that they’re able to make a full recovery.
