HICKSVILLE, NEW YORK (March 28, 2026) – A 21-year-old motorcyclist has tragically died in a Hicksville school bus accident on Old Country Road.
Nassau County officials are saying that the accident took place on Tuesday morning. The motorcyclist was driving a Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound when he was hit by a school bus.
The force of the impact knocked him to the ground, leaving him with major injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
He was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he later died at the hospital. The driver of the school bus remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
School buses are normally very safe for passengers. But they can be particularly dangerous for motorcycles in those smaller vehicles. Bus drivers should be especially cautious when turning. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1141, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a motorcyclist, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Liability for any school bus accident could extend beyond one particular driver. The school district or private employer that a bus driver worked for could also be legally responsible. As a general rule, employers in New York can be vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their workers who were operating within the scope of their job duties.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the motorcyclist killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the authorities. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
