LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (April 1, 2026) – Google and Meta have been ordered to pay a woman $6 million following a historic lawsuit related to social media addiction.
The plaintiff in the trial reportedly suffered substantial harm through her use of YouTube and Instagram. She began using YouTube when she was six years old and Instagram when she was nine years old.
Both platforms reportedly consumed much of her life. She testified during the trial that she would use the apps all day, every day.
This led to her experiencing severe mental health issues. This includes body dysmorphia, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
More trials are expected to continue in the very near future. This case is one of several that are in Los Angeles courts.
Companies in the United States have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. This necessitates that their products comply with all relevant safety standards. Certain products may need to have warnings because they can pose a serious risk of harm, including addiction in some instances. There are several elements that will need to be demonstrated in any prima facie case of product liability.
In short, attorneys who are litigating social media addiction cases are saying that the defendants created products they knew were addictive. They were purposefully designed to be this way. They were also aware of foreseeable risks associated with their products. Instead of taking any action to mitigate harm, the companies designed their platforms to maximize user engagement as long as possible. This was accomplished through algorithmic reinforcement and other measures.
There is a growing abundance of studies that have established the negative mental health effects of social media. According to the Annals of Neurosciences, “A robust body of literature links high social media use with adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents and young adults, and has found positive correlations between time spent on social networking sites and symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness and reduced life satisfaction.” Several steps should be taken after being harmed by social media.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any instance of harm caused by social media. Tech companies like Google and Meta have made it clear that they have no intention of accepting responsibility for the harm that their products have caused. However, there have been many whistleblowers who have alerted the public that these companies had internal reports of the psychological harm their products caused. Any person who has suffered from depression or suicidal thoughts due to their social media addiction may be able to pursue damages through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law were very pleased to hear about the resolution of this trial against Meta and Google. It brings us one step closer towards achieving justice for all of the people who have been harmed by social media. These companies have known for a long time that their products are routinely damaging the mental health of young children.
