Investigation Underway After Several People Injured in Bronx Apartment Fire

BRONX, NEW YORK (August 24, 2025) – Multiple people were injured, and dozens of families were evacuated following a Bronx apartment fire along Cypress Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the fires started around 2 PM on Wednesday. Around 180 fire and EMS officials were called to the scene to help the victims.

The fire was eventually put out. Residents in the lower levels said that they were concerned about water damage.

Multiple people were transported to the hospital to receive treatment.

Liability for New York City Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across New York City. According to the New York Fire Commissioner, “There were 23,901 structural fires in Fiscal 2023, a two percent increase compared to 23,387 in Fiscal 2022.There were 12,594 non-structural fires in Fiscal 2023, a seven percent decrease compared to Fiscal 2022. Total fire company runs between Fiscal 2022 and Fiscal 2023 increased 3 percent.” There could be multiple causes of any apartment fires.

  • Many fires are caused by space heaters left near flammable materials.
  • Fires can also be started by unattended cooking.
  • Faulty lithium-ion batteries are another major cause of fires.

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This includes abiding by all fire codes. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on the property, they must take action. Failing to protect apartment residents from a dangerous condition could be construed as negligence. There are many ways that an apartment owner may have failed to protect against fires.

  • Fire exits may have been blocked.
  • Smoke alarms may have been nonfunctional.
  • Appliances may not have been routinely inspected and maintained.

Apartment fires are often highly preventable. In many cases, there could be liability on the part of multiple parties. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. A car accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
