Another New York City Crane Accident Justifies The Need For Safer Construction Site Procedures

A New York City construction site was yet again the location of another fatal accident. On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, a crane accident killed two construction workers in Queens.

The horrific accident happened at a construction site near 81-10 134th Street at around 12:20 p.m. One construction worker was posting a beam before it disengaged from the crane, striking the cab of the crane and a flag person. According to an FDNY official, both workers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated according to NYPD Deputy Chief George Healy. However, the weather may have been a factor since the National Weather Service forecast sustained winds between 23 and 25 miles per hour with up to 36 miles per hour gusts for the day. Safety regulations were introduced back in February, restricting when cranes are allowed to operate when strong winds pose a risk.

More Accidents Continue To Prove the Need for Safer Construction Site Procedures

Construction site accidents have unfortunately become all too common in New York. While some accidents are not preventable, others can be. If the contractors and project owners take certain precautionary and preventive measures, most tragic construction site accidents can be avoided, or at least the extent of the injuries can be reduced.
