BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (December 6, 2024) – A 73-year-old woman has tragically died in a Brooklyn pedestrian accident by 11th Street and Avenue L.

New York City officials are saying the collision took place around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. A woman was crossing the street when she was hit by a Jeep.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. She was taken to Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital.

Sadly, she later died at the hospital.

Liability for Brooklyn Pedestrian Collisions

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Traffic-related pedestrian injuries are preventable but are increasing in the United States. In 2021, approximately 7,000 pedestrians died in motor vehicle crashes, representing a 40-year high.” Drivers should take several steps in order to avoid pedestrian collisions.

  • Drivers should use their horns to alert pedestrians of their presence.
  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making left turns.
  • Drivers should slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Drivers must exercise a great deal of caution to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. They should be particularly cautious around older pedestrians who tend to move slower. Children can also act unpredictably, and drivers should take this into consideration. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian collisions often suffer serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Pedestrian collisions are usually very preventable. They are much more likely to take place at an intersection. Left turns can also be particularly dangerous. Drivers may overlook a pedestrian in the crosswalk as they are checking for traffic. The family of any person killed in a pedestrian accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
