NYPD Investigating Fatal Upper West Side Accident by 109th Street
UPPER WEST SIDE, NEW YORK (May 26, 2026) – Two people have tragically died in an Upper West Side car accident by 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday. A suspected drunk driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed his Mercedes-Benz SUV into several people on a sidewalk.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all the injured parties. Three people were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital with critical injuries.
Sadly, two other people died due to the nature of their injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
Driver intoxication remains a leading cause of preventable car accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be one of the biggest safety issues on U.S. roads. In 2023, 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, a decrease of 7.6%, marking the second consecutive yearly improvement.” It is important that several actions are taken after any DUI collision.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, they could be held liable through a civil claim. When drivers cause car accidents while intoxicated, they may also face criminal liability for their actions. It is important that the victims of DY collections understand that they do have options. They’re able to seek some measure of accountability and transparency through a personal injury claim. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person killed in a crash.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the two victims killed in this crash. It is our sincere hope that the other victims will be able to make a full recovery. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
