Many people are seriously injured or killed every year in apartment fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2019–2023, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 14,830 reported structure fires in high-rise buildings each year. These fires caused an average of 33 civilian deaths, 439 civilian injuries, and $203 million in direct property damage per year.” Several different causes could contribute to an apartment fire.
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a safe condition. They can be liable for accidents caused by defects on their property. This can include instances where property owners fail to uphold building or safety codes. The family of any person killed in an apartment fire may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
