STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (February 3, 2026) – Two people were injured in a Staten Island MTA bus accident on the Westshore Expressway by South Avenue.
New York City officials are saying the accident took place around 6:20 AM on Tuesday. An MTA bus was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle.
The force of the impact caused major damage to the passenger vehicle. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims.
Two people were transported to the hospital, though their conditions are not known. A full investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
A number of people are injured every year in accidents involving MTA buses in New York City. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Bus drivers should take certain actions to prevent accidents.
If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, they could be held at fault through a civil claim. Liability for a bus accident could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. The private employer or municipal entity that a bus driver worked for can also be responsible. Employers are typically liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
