Liability for Nassau County Car Accidents

Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of preventable car accidents in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be one of the biggest safety issues on U.S. roads. In 2023, 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, a decrease of 7.6%, marking the second consecutive yearly improvement.” Even small amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.

  • Drivers are less able to stay in one lane of traffic.
  • Drivers have delayed reaction times while intoxicated.
  • Drivers tend to have a difficult time maintaining a consistent speed.

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In particular, no one should operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. If a driver causes an accident while intoxicated, they could face criminal and civil liability. Any person injured in a collision with an intoxicated driver may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
