NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK (January 5, 2026) – An off-duty Nassau County officer was arrested on suspicion of DWI after a wrong-way car accident with a garbage truck on Route 135.
Nassau County officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:44 a.m. on Friday. The Nassau County officer was driving a Ford Bronco when he was involved in a collision with a garbage truck.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims. In all, three people were taken to the hospital.
The officer involved has since been arrested on suspicion of DWI.
Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of preventable car accidents in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be one of the biggest safety issues on U.S. roads. In 2023, 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, a decrease of 7.6%, marking the second consecutive yearly improvement.” Even small amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.
It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In particular, no one should operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. If a driver causes an accident while intoxicated, they could face criminal and civil liability. Any person injured in a collision with an intoxicated driver may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this Nassau County car accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. It is deeply concerning that a member of law enforcement would allegedly drive a vehicle while intoxicated.
