Investigation Underway After 15 Students Injured in Queens School Bus Accident on the Long Island Expressway
QUEENS, JUNE (June 18, 2026)—At least 15 people were injured in a Queens school bus crash on the Long Island Expressway by Grand Central Parkway.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Wednesday afternoon. The school bus was heading down the Long Island Expressway when it was involved in some type of collision.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the injured victims. Six adults and nine children were transported to local area hospitals to receive treatment.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
School buses can be very dangerous and are involved in many serious accidents each year. According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 110 people nationwide in 2024, down 14% compared to the 128 deaths in 2023, according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” There are many ways that school buses can be dangerous.
School buses have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of pedestrians.
School buses have a high center of gravity and are more susceptible to rolling over.
School buses can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and be difficult to bring to a complete stop.
School buses often lack seatbelts for bus passengers.
If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Bus drivers are considered common carriers and are held to a heightened standard in terms of safety. When a bus driver is negligent and causes a crash, the private or municipal entity that the bus driver worked for could also be legally responsible. Generally speaking, employers are usually responsible for the wrongful actions of their employees who were working within their job duties.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this Queens school bus accident. It is our hope that they will be able to make a full recovery. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong for the sake of all of the victims.
