Elderly Pedestrian Seriously Injured In Central Islip Pedestrian Collision Involving Jeep at Intersection With a History of Accidents

CENTRAL ISLIP, NEW YORK (October 26, 2026) – A 79-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in a Central Islip car accident along Suffolk Avenue.

Suffolk County officials are saying that the collision occurred around 7:35 a.m. on Sunday. The 79-year-old pedestrian was crossing an intersection on foot when she was hit by a Jeep Wrangler heading southbound and making a left turn onto Suffolk Avenue.

Emergency responders were called to the scene of the collision to help the innocent victim. She was transported to South Shore University Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Liability for Central Islip Pedestrian Accidents

New York law requires that all drivers yield to pedestrians that are lawfully within marked crosswalks. Pursuant to Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146 “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Drivers should take many different actions to avoid pedestrian collisions.

  • Safe Speed: Drivers should maintain a safe speed at all times.
  • Hazard Scanning: Drivers should constantly scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.
  • Sobriety: Drivers should abstain from drugs or alcohol that could impair their judgment.
  • Blind Spots: Drivers should check their blind spots before initiating any turn.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that turns into the path of a pedestrian near them. These types of accidents tend to be the result of drivers that are not properly scanning the road. Any person injured due to the negligence of another driver may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
