Investigation Underway After 56-Year-Old Man Killed In Flushing, Queens Hit-And-Run Collision By Kissena Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway
QUEENS, NEW YORK (August 20, 2024) – A 56-year-old man has tragically died in a Flushing, Queens hit-and-run collision by Kissena Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. A Honda Accord was involved in a collision with a U-Haul truck.
The force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to hit a pedestrian crossing the road. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
He was later pronounced dead. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Pedestrians are uniquely vulnerable to the hazards posed by motor vehicles. According to the IIHS, “Deaths from motor vehicle crashes with pedestrians have increased 83% since reaching their low point in 2009 and account for 18% of crash fatalities. The rates of pedestrian crash deaths per 100,000 people are highest for people ages 20 and over.” Several factors could contribute to pedestrian collisions.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. When a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a civil claim. Preserving evidence is crucial after any pedestrian collision.
It can be hard to know what to do after a pedestrian accident. Drivers will often do everything that they can to evade liability. They may blame other drivers or the victim. This is why it is so important for victims and their families to seek legal counsel as early as possible. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be some accountability for the victim’s family.
