What Are the Causes of Lymphedema?

There are two types of lymphedema, primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is a congenital medical condition that is generally present at birth. Symptoms of primary lymphedema, which may occur without any known family history, typically become apparent later in life.

Secondary lymphedema is caused when a normally functioning lymphatic system is blocked or damaged, typically due to a surgical procedure or an injury. Some common surgical procedures that are associated with lymphedema are peripheral vascular surgery, breast cancer surgery, and vein stripping.  Lymph nodes may also be damaged due to trauma, burns, radiation and infection.
