Woman Was Using Crosswalk When She Was Hit by 2020 GMC Van in West Village, Manhattan
WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN (December 5, 2025) – A woman from Cambridge, Massachusetts has tragically died in a West Village, Manhattan pedestrian accident on Morton Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. The female pedestrian was walking when she was hit by the 2020 GMC van that traveled the wrong way down a one-way street.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. She was given CPR but later died due to her injuries.
Local residents say that a number of drivers have gone the wrong way down that particular street.
Despite continued efforts to make NYC safer for pedestrians, far too many people in the city are killed or seriously injured in pedestrian collisions. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, “Preventing traffic-related injuries and deaths is the goal of New York City’s (NYC) Vision Zero initiative. Between 2012 and 2014, there were 497 pedestrian fatalities, accounting for more than half of the total 889 traffic- related fatalities in NYC.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.
Drivers must exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. If a van or truck was involved in a collision, liability may extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. The company that owned or operated a commercial vehicle could be responsible for the collision. The family of any person who died in an accident with a vehicle may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this West Village pedestrian accident. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the NYPD. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
