According to the NY Department of Health, “Approximately 300 pedestrians are killed and 15,000 are injured by motor vehicles each year on the state’s roadways, and more than 3,000 pedestrians are admitted to the hospital annually.” Cities should take a number of measures in order to prevent pedestrian deaths.

  • Cities should heavily enforce traffic violations likely to lead to accidents.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable and involve some amount of driver error. For example, many drivers fail to check their blind spots when they make turns.
