Nassau Police Investigating Merrick Car Accident That Seriously Injured Crossing Guard by Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway
MERRICK, NEW YORK (February 28, 2026)—A crossing guard was seriously injured in a Merrick car accident near the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway.
Long Island officials are saying that the accident took place around 8 AM on Tuesday morning. A 70-year-old crossing guard was hit by a vehicle and knocked to the ground.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.
The driver responsible for the crash is suspected of being under the influence of drugs and was arrested. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Driver intoxication remains a leading cause of preventable car accidents in the United States. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 42 minutes. In 2023, 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” Drugs and alcohol can affect drivers in a number of ways.
If a driver collides with another vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is illegal to operate any motor vehicle while intoxicated. It is important that accident victims are aware of their rights and that those rights are being protected. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the crossing guard injured in this Merrick car accident. It is our sincere hope that the victim will be able to make a full recovery. This was a preventable tragedy that should not have taken place.
