Common Symptoms of Xarelto Bleeding

Xarelto is an FDA-approved anticoagulant drug used for the treatment of stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and blood clots in patients who recently underwent hip or knee replacement surgery. Similar to other anticoagulants, Xarelto has risks of internal bleeding as one of its serious side effects. However, unlike the other drugs in its category, internal bleeding in Xarelto patients cannot be controlled or reversed using antidotes such as vitamin K.

What Is Internal Bleeding?

Internal bleeding is the loss of blood that occurs within a patient’s body. Since internal bleeding happens inside the body, rather than on the outside, they can go unnoticed for a period of time.

If the patient suffers a rapid bleed, sufficient blood may accrue to press on internal organs or form a bulge underneath the skin. Severe internal bleeding can cause the patient to go into shock, lose consciousness and even die.

Symptoms of Xarelto Internal Bleeding

Common symptoms of Xarelto internal bleeding include:

  • Pink or brown urine
  • Black or red stool
  • Unexpected bleeding or bleeding that last an unusually long time
  • Bleeding that cannot be controlled
  • Severe bruising with an unknown cause
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Unexpected swelling, pain, headaches, dizziness, weakness or joint pain
