At Least 17 Injured After Two Trains Collided Near Montclair and Boonton Line, West of Bay Street
MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY (December 21, 2025) – At least 17 people were injured in a Montclair train accident, not far from the Bay Street Station.
Montclair officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:47 PM on Friday. Two trains made contact for undetermined reasons.
The force of the impact caused a derailment. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. In total, at least 17 people required medical treatment.
The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into what happened.
A number of people are injured in accidents with trains every year. According to the National Safety Council, “Railroad deaths totaled 954 in 2024, a 1% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 967. Nonfatal injuries totaled 6,542, a 3% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 6,768. From 2023 to 2024, fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased 7%, while fatalities involving other types of incidents decreased 4%.” Many different factors could cause a train accident.
Train operators have a legal obligation to exercise a great deal of care to avoid collisions. They must maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. They must also follow all state and federal regulations for operating trains. If a train fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, vehicles, or another train, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any train accident.
It can be difficult to know where to begin after being injured in a train accident. Many victims are so seriously injured that they may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be burdened with high medical bills. Any person injured in the train accident may have legal recourse through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people who were injured in this New Jersey train accident. It is our sincere hope that they will be able to make a full recovery. This was a preventable accident that should not have taken place. Many questions remain unanswered.
