QUEENS, NEW YORK (June 30, 2026) – A 13-year-old boy on a moped scooter has tragically died in a Queens truck accident by the intersection of 162nd Street and 45th Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 12:30 PM on Monday. Two teen boys were on a moped that was traveling down the road and attempting to pass a parked car.
One person in that car suddenly opened their door, which caused one of the teens to swerve to get out of the way. Unfortunately, this caused the moped driver to lose control.
One of the teens was thrown off the moped and underneath the wheels of a large truck. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help both of the victims.
Sadly, one of the teens ended up dying as a result of their injuries.
A dooring accident occurs when a person opens their door into the path of a cyclist. Sadly, these incidents are quite common. According to the NHTSA, “Drivers of motor vehicles need to share the road with bicyclists. Be courteous – allow at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road, look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling from a parking space, and yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals. Be especially watchful for cyclists when making turns.” There are many factors that could contribute to any dooring accident.
If a driver opens their door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Liability for such an accident could extend to several parties. This includes the driver of a truck or other vehicle that hits a cyclist after they have been hit by a car door. Drivers are supposed to constantly scan the road ahead of them and slow down to avoid all potential hazards. The family of any person killed after being hit by a car door is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the child killed in this collision. It is our sincere hope that the other victim is able to fully recover. This was an entirely preventable accident. It should not have taken place. Drivers need to be more cautious and aware when pedestrians are nearby.
