Investigation Underway After Several Students Injured In Yorktown School Bus Collision Involving Hummer SUV

YORKTOWN, NEW YORK (August 25, 2024) – Multiple students were injured in a Yorktown school bus collision along Route 132 by the Taconic State Parkway.

Yorktown police officials are saying that the incident took place around 9:20 a.m. on Friday. Investigators suspect that a Hummer SUV pulled in front of a school bus before they collided.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. Multiple students were injured and transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Hummer may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Yorktown School Bus Collisions

Speeding is a major cause of vehicle collisions in the United States. According to the Department of Transportation, “Eighteen percent of the drivers involved were speeding at the time of the crashes, and 29 percent of those killed were in speeding-related traffic crashes.” Several other factors could contribute to collisions.

  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Medical conditions
  • Poor driving habits

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Bus drivers are considered common carriers and must be particularly cautious. If a bus driver fails to take reasonable measures in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any collision.

  • Medical records related to the crash should be collected.
  • Eyewitnesses should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • The police report should be reviewed.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any bus collision. Victims often have very serious injuries. Many of these injuries may not be immediately apparent after a collision. Adrenaline from a collision can easily mask serious injuries. Any person injured in a school bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
