Worker Killed in Staten Island Barge Explosion

One Person Killed, Two Firefighters Injured After Container on Petroleum Barge Named Casablanca

MARINERS HARBOR, STATEN ISLAND (September 18, 2026) – A worker has tragically died and two firefighters were injured after some type of explosion on a petroleum barge in Staten Island.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 2:30 PM on Thursday. Firefighters and first responders were called to the Casablanca petroleum barge at 3249 Richmond Terrace after getting reports of a fire.

Over 50 units responded to the scene along with a hazmat team. Two firefighters were injured while putting out the blaze.

Sadly, one of the workers on the petroleum barge was reportedly found deceased. A full investigation into the cause of the explosion remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Accidents at Petroleum Barges
