Utility Worker Critically Injured After Being Hit By Falling Tool Bag
NORTH BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY (February 25, 2025) – A utility worker was critically injured after being hit by a tool bag that fell at a North Brunswick cell tower.
North Brunswick officials are saying that the accident took place around 1:30 PM on Friday. The worker was performing his job duties at the cell tower on Lindsay Drive and was hit by a bag of tools that fell 150 feet.
Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. A full investigation by OSHA remains ongoing at this time.
Millions of people are injured on the job every year in the United States. Many of these accidents occur in the construction industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In 2022, nearly 1 in 5 workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry and 38.4 percent of these deaths were due to falls, slips, and trips. The construction industry accounted for close to half, 47.4 percent, of all fatal falls, slips, and trips in 2022.” There are a number of steps companies should take in order to prevent their workers from being hit by falling objects.
Construction companies have a legal obligation to maintain their worksites in a reasonably safe condition. When a worker is injured in New Jersey, they will typically have recourse through the Workers’ Compensation system. An injured construction worker may also be able to seek aid through a third-party liability claim. A third-party claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. For example, a building owner could be liable if there was a defect with their premises that contributed to an accident. Workers tend to suffer very serious injuries in workplace accidents.
It could be hard to know what to do if you’ve been injured in a workplace accident. These accidents tend to leave victims with high medical bills. They may also impair their ability to be gainfully employed. In many cases, injured workers may never be able to return to their previous profession. It is important that workers understand that they do have legal options if they’re injured on the job. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
