Woman Hospitalized After Being Hit By Illegal Moped In Manhattan
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (November 12, 2024) – A 57-year-old woman was seriously injured in a moped hit-and-run collision in Manhattan.
New York City officials are saying that the incident involved an unregistered and unlicensed moped. The female pedestrian was knocked to the ground and seriously injured after the moped ran through a red light.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the woman. She was taken to the hospital and will undergo surgery.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year in hit-and-run collisions. According to the IIHS, “Twenty-five percent of pedestrian deaths in 2022 occurred in hit-and-run crashes. Between 2013 and 2019, hit-and-run crashes accounted for about 20% of pedestrian fatalities. This number jumped to 24% in 2020, and it has inched up to 25% since then.” Cities should take a number of measures in order to prevent hit-and-run collisions.
All drivers have a legal obligation to take steps in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. According to New York Vehicle Code 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It can be hard to know what to do after a car accident. Many victims are so seriously injured that they may never be able to return to their previous jobs. It is important that accident victims are aware of their rights and that those rights are being protected. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
