Woman Killed in Staten Island Hit-And-Run Car Accident on Decker Avenue

NYPD Investigating Fatal Staten Island Collision That Killed 60-Year-Old Mother by Decker Avenue and Catherine Street

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (July 2, 2026) – A 60-year-old mother has tragically died in a Staten Island hit-and-run car accident by the intersection of Decker Avenue and Catherine Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Father’s Day. The victim was walking when she was struck by a speeding BMW.

Paramedics responded to the scene of the crash to help the injured woman. She was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.

Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries four days after the initial crash. A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

A 26-year-old man believed to be involved in the crash has surrendered to the police.

Liability for Staten Island Car Accidents

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable car collisions across New York and the United States. According to the Department of Transportation, “Speeding increases both the frequency and severity of crashes, yet it is both persistent and largely accepted as the norm amongst the traveling public. Unsafe speeds are a well-documented and understood factor in death and injury, especially among people outside of a vehicle.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any pedestrian collision.

  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should be collected.
  • Any person who may have witnessed the crash should be interviewed early on.
  • Any physical evidence left after a crash should be sought.
  • Victims should consider their legal options with an experienced attorney.

If a driver does not slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. Drivers that flee the scene of any injury collision could face criminal charges in addition to civil liability. It is important for victims to understand that they do have legal options. They’re able to seek some measure of accountability and justice through a civil claim. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person who died.
