NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK (June 25, 2026) – A woman has tragically died in a New York City jet ski accident not far from Randall Island.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Sunday, June 21. An investigation revealed that a 27-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were riding on a jet ski when they were involved in a collision with another jet ski operated by a man and a woman.
The force of the impact sent all four people into the water. The Coast Guard was called to the scene to help each of the victims. One woman was transported to a local hospital in Harlem in critical condition.
Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. One person has since been charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident.
Jet skis have become a popular recreational vessel. But they’re also involved in many serious crashes each year. According to one study in the National Institutes of Health, “Personal watercraft-related injuries have increased significantly from an estimated 2860 in 1990 to more than 12000 in 1995. During this period, the number of PWC in operation increased 3-fold from approximately 241500 in 1990 to an estimated 760000 in 1995. The most prevalent diagnoses were lacerations, contusions, and fractures.” There are many factors that could contribute to any jet ski collision.
A large number of jet ski accidents involve people who are unexperienced.
Speeding is another major factor that could contribute to jet ski collisions.
Rough water collisions can make it difficult to operate a jet ski safely.
If a jet ski operator fails to slow down to avoid a collision with another person or vessel, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Depending on the facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any jet ski collision. This includes the company that rented a jet ski to some person. A jet ski rental service can be liable for an accident through the legal theory of negligent entrustment.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
