Investigation Underway After Woman Killed in East Harlem Garbage Truck Collision on East 101st Street
EAST HARLEM, MANHATTAN (April 30, 2026) – A 75-year-old woman has tragically died in an East Harlem, Manhattan garbage truck accident along East 101st Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on Tuesday morning. A garbage truck was heading down the road when the driver lost control and struck a passenger vehicle.
The force of the impact pushed the sedan into scaffolding, which caused it to collapse. A female pedestrian was hit by the falling scaffolding.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Sadly, she later died due to the severity of her injuries.
A full investigation of the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Garbage truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with a great deal of care. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1128(a), “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Multiple factors could contribute to any truck accident.
If a garbage truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian or other vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Liability for a truck collision could extend to several different parties. In particular, the company that a garbage truck driver worked for could be held at fault. Employers can be liable for the wrongful conduct of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this crash. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
